Hatteras Island Cemetery Preservation Project
Generations, that is what it takes at times to tell one's story. This is ours and we have chosen to do so
by preserving the final resting places of our ancestors & loved ones of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
In the late Fall of the year 2020, I made a request to Hatteras Island Archives' Facebook Group,
for volunteers to help clean these sacred cemeteries. Hands went up. Donations were sent.
The Hatteras Island Cemetery Preservation Project was born.
Since that time we've been able to purchase a used utility trailer to carry landscaping equipment
and hand tools to and from sites. We also received a truck bed tool box to place on it. Plus, there are many
gravestones that are in need of some tlc. Time & weather have done their damage. After much research,
we purchased professional monument cleaning solution, brushes, scrapers, hand pumped garden sprayers,
and other tools that will help in their preservation.
Even with this being said, there is still much work to be done and equipment is needed.
Stones that have fallen over have to be lifted. Many are heavy. A hoist to accomplish this is now on the
list of must have items. Gravel also needs to be placed underneath the stones for support once removed.
We also need added landscaping tools and the maintenance items to keep them in working order.
Then there is you...
Support is needed in many ways. We're looking for people who can help find & identify
island graves & cemeteries that are in need of preservation. Do you know of unmarked graves or sites
that are overgrown and are truly needing of our help ? Are you able to donate funds so that we can
obtain the items needed for the Hatteras Island Cemetery Preservation Project to succeed ?
We'd love to hear from you !
